A Note From Helen
by helen ~ July 15th, 2009. Filed under: Uncategorized. This week’s broadcast is a re-airing of a show that I absolutely loved the first time around. It features Ladysmith Black Mambazo, who have become the musical cultural icon of South Africa. These guys . . wow! What can I tell you? Vocalizing so gorgeously together, blending all those fantastic voices and singing in their native tongue. Gives you goose bumps to listen to them.
Also joining us is Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Darrell Scott, beautifully backed by Nick & and the Etones, I must say . . plus I get some pretty darn good harmony singing in there with Darrell, too, if I do say so myself (which I guess I just did – hard for a Minnesotan to brag on oneself, but obviously I got over it for at least that brief moment there). A master of both infectious Appalachian-inflected riffs and the instruments that bring them to life, Darrell’s songs are propelled by his knack for blending tradition-soaked hooks with personal, contemporary lyrics. Also one of THE best singers I’ve ever heard. He’s truly a joy to hear. There’s a fantastic E-Chievement Award story of community problems, solutions and successes, and one of the most unique and touching finale performances in Etown’s storied history. Tune in to Etown, this week!
And for this week, have a good week. Talk to you next week!
